When it comes to maintaining the comfort of your home, your HVAC system plays a critical role—especially here in the Arizona heat. But choosing the right HVAC company can feel overwhelming with so many options across Phoenix, Scottsdale, Gilbert, Chandler, and the surrounding areas.
Knowing the right questions to ask can help you confidently choose a team that understands your home, your system, and your long-term comfort goals. Below are three essential questions every homeowner should ask before hiring an HVAC company.
- What are your recommendations for HVAC maintenance?
Ultimately, a clean and maintained HVAC is a happy HVAC. Not only will maintenance improve the efficiency of your system, but it will also help extend the life of your HVAC. Energy efficiency should be a top priority for any homeowner in the Valley. HVAC systems are one of the largest contributors to energy use, and even small improvements can lead to significant savings on your monthly utility bills.
Manufacturers recommend bi-annual cleanings, but require at least annual cleanings to maintain the warranty. Just like your car, if you don’t change your oil according to guidelines, you can void your warranty. Thus, we guide people toward at least annual maintenance.
A knowledgeable HVAC company should spend at least 45 minutes on cleaning and maintenance of your system. They should clean both your indoor and outdoor coils, test all your electrical components for health, and take temperature splits. If you do not receive a report with this information, it’s important to ask for one.
You’ll see that many companies offer a $29 or $49 check up. This is usually to get their foot in the door and then sell you, and add on, or at least a maintenance plan. We offer upfront pricing with no sales pitch attached. We do not offer maintenance plans because, generally, they benefit the company more than the client, and we want you to make the choice to use us every time. And if we recommend your system, it will be backed by data or photos we can provide from our inspection.
If you’re considering a new HVAC installation, we’d also be happy to talk to you about your options. We work with nearly all major brands and can make recommendations based on your budget and what factors are important to you.
- When is it better to replace vs repair my HVAC system?
This is a question we get every day, and the answer is that it always depends! It depends on the complexity and cost of repair, the age of your unit, and your budget. As a general rule, if the cost of repair is more than half the cost of a new system, then we will steer towards a new system, as a new system will come with a minimum 10-year part and 2-year labor warranty. A repair only comes with a 1-year part and labor warranty – and that warranty only covers that part. If a system is more than 12 years old, we may guide toward a new system even if the cost is 25% of a new system. But our technicians are trained to explain your options and offer no-pressure solutions.
When choosing an HVAC company, it’s important to note that not all HVAC companies are experienced with every system. Whether your home uses a central air system, ductless mini-split, heat pump, or furnace, it’s important to work with a team that understands your specific setup. Brand is also important, as each brand has a slightly different setup and specifications.
This question becomes even more important if you’re planning an HVAC installation or system upgrade. A qualified provider should be able to walk you through your options, explain what works best for your home, and provide examples of similar installations they’ve completed in areas like Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, Gilbert, and Chandler.
The right HVAC company won’t just service your system—they’ll help you make smarter long-term decisions about your home’s comfort and efficiency.
- How Do You Handle Repairs and Emergency HVAC Services?
In Arizona, HVAC issues aren’t just inconvenient—they’re urgent. When your system goes down in the middle of summer, having an HVAC company you know and trust on speed dial is imperative.
When choosing an HVAC company, a few things are important to know. Ask about response times, same-day service availability, and after-hours or emergency repair options.
A reliable HVAC company should be transparent about what you can expect during a service call, so it’s also important to understand their repair process:
- Do they provide a full diagnosis before starting work?
- Are estimates clear and upfront?
- Will they walk you through your options?
- Are there fees for after-hours or emergency services?
- Are their technicians incentivized for add-on sales?
At Big Sky Cooling, Heating, and Home Services, our technicians are not incentivized for add-on sales – their bonuses are based on arriving at jobs on time and providing 5-star customer service.
During the hot summer months, we prioritize outages over non-urgent issues, especially homes where the elderly, people with high-risk health issues, and/or pets reside. That said, we do ask for your patience if we need to reschedule non-urgent services like home services and annual maintenance.
